My month with Cosmopolitan Magazine

MY MONTH WITH COSMOPOLITAN MAGAZINE

I was extremely lucky and grateful this month to be the Beauty intern with Cosmopolitan Magazine.

You can imagine the excitement on my face when I got the email. I literally didn't stop smiling all weekend, and didn't get much sleep either. If you know me I'm such a worrier and panic over the slightest things, so as soon as I sent my confirmation email a million things started running through my mind. And the first thing was OMG what am I going to wear. All of a sudden the entire contents of my wardrobe didn't cut it, so after some stressful shopping and outfits planned I started to finally enjoy my achievement.

After a lovely weekend home with the family it soon was the night before my first day. My 5:45am alarm suddenly started ringing and I made my journey to London and Cosmo HQ.

When you think of typical work experience jobs, you imagine making teas and coffee and doing simple errands. I too had this impression of what my time would be like however, I was totally wrong. Never did I expect to have such a unbelievable first day, besides everyone being so friendly I had the opportunity to write something for the magazines website. Overall my experience at Cosmo was above and beyond what I had expected. Here's just a little insight to what I got up too.

DAILY DUTIES
My daily duties stayed roughly the same but changed here and there during the month. As soon as I got in each morning I'd check the current beauty stories online and make a list just in case Victoria the Digital Beauty Editor wanted me to cover anything. Then I'd see if Laura the Beauty Assistant needed anything doing before the first lot of mail came. Doing the mail and sorting through the PR packages actually was one of my favourite things to do. It gave me the chance to see new upcoming product releases and sort everything away in the beauty cupboard or the room of dreams as I called it. Being the makeup junkie that I am organising that room was absolute heaven.

I also had opportunities to speak to and email PR companies of different brands in case we needed products for shoots or high-res images for magazine features. At first I was quite nervous doing this job as it was quite important however, by the second week it was quite fun.

Never did I think that over the month I would have a couple of features published on the magazines website. Writing during school was never my strong point but whilst at university and writing about things I like (beauty, fashion, makeup etc) made me grow in confidence. At first I was really nervous but I think writing for Cosmo has helped me further my writing skills and again given me that extra boost of encouragement with my writing.

OFFICE ENVIRONMENT
If you imagine the scenes in Devil Wears Prada when everyone's running around like headless chickens, Cosmopolitan was the complete opposite. I really liked how relaxed and chilled the atmosphere was. Obviously it was still a busy environment however, with a bit of music and chit chat it made the office enjoyable to work in.

LITTLE EXTRAS
Apart from my daily duties, I was particularly lucky to have been given opportunities to go to some events. These events included going to Selfridges, where I tried out the new Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer (literally looked like something from Star Wars). I also met up with the lovely girls from Eylure and OPI, where I had a look at new collections. But my favourite little treat was going to the London Edition Hotel where I experienced one of the best facials I'd ever had with Fresh Beauty.

I could go on and on about my time at Cosmopolitan I still pinch myself that it has actually happened. I would say to anyone who is looking to apply or is waiting to start an internship, firstly be patient and be willing to work hard.
I've learnt so much and can't thank Laura Capon and the rest of the beauty team enough for the amazing time I had there. To get an insight into an industry I already love was the prefect start to my summer and hopefully one day a future career option too.
